In 1940, the Folies-bergere’s Ballet Mistress and Choreographer, Miss Bluebell (Margaret Kelly), was arrested by the French police and interned in Besancon while pregnant. She was freed but in 1942 Marcel Leibovici (her husband, Jewish pianist and composer at the Folies Bergère) was arrested and deported to an internment camp. The French Resistance helped him flee and return to Paris, where he was hidden by Margaret until the Liberation of Paris. During this time, Margaret provided him with food and security at the risk of her life. Suspected of protecting her husband, she was interrogated by the Gestapo, but in spite of intense questioning, Margaret succeeded in not divulging his whereabouts.
** You can see both of their names in the program’s credits.
There are pages of black and white photographs of the acts with mention of some of the dancers’ names. Many of the photos show the topless dancers for which the Folies-Bergere is famous.
The Program is 9 1/2 x 12 inches. Stapled binding. Front Cover is embossed and a silver foil insert showing a topless dancer with an ostrich plume fan is glued on.
